There was a population 30,688 people living in Maroubra, based on the 2016 Census

Maroubra is believed to be named after the local Aboriginal word meaning ‘Place of Thunder’. It is understood that the first house to be built in the area was by Humphrey McKeon in 1861, soon after a number of other settlers arrived on the land and in the 1870s they began work on the wool scouring works which was located at the north end of Maroubra bay.

The suburb made its headlines on 6 May 1898, when the ship named The Hereward, was caught by the gale force winds and shipwrecked at the northern end of Maroubra Beach. It was a fully rigged iron ship weighing 1,513 tons and was on its way north toward Newcastle. Over the years the wreck was slowly washed out to sea, and by 1937 only its triangle dorsal fin was left visible above sea level. In later years the local City Council feared that the ships remains posed a true danger, especially to swimmers and surfers enjoying the beach. So they ordered the remains be blasted and by 1967 it was believed that nothing was left of the ship.

In recent years, huge amounts of sand have been moved off the sea floor due to strong currents and big swells and extensive portions of the Hereward have since been exposed and remain in situ.   Hereward Street in Maroubra is named after this ship and is a nod to this important part of  Maroubra’s History.
