MORE INFO ABOUT COOGEE
There was a population of 15,212 living in Coogee , based on the 2016 Census.
Coogee’s name is taken from a local Aboriginal word koo-chai or koo-jah, which means “the smell of the seaweed drying” or “stinking seaweed”. This is in reference to the smell of the dried and decaying kelp or seaweed that washed up on the beach itself.
In 1838, Coogee was gazetted as a village and the first school was built in 1863. This old school building was then converted into the Coogee Bay Hotel in 1873. The Coogee Palace Aquarium and swimming baths were constructed in 1887 and in 1928 the Coogee Pleasure Pier was constructed. This was a large pier running through the centre of the beach and it included a theatre, restaurant, and ballroom. Unfortunately, 1934, this large pier was demolished.
Sometimes, at low tide, you can still see the pylons from the original pier.
Another important aspect of Coogee’s history was the electric tram that connected Coogee to the City from 1902. The tram line was closed in 1960 and now unused sections of the old tramlines have been converted into a community garden that are maintained by locals. A new light rail system has been built and ends at Randwick. It doesn’t go as far as Coogee.
