There were 15,482 people living in Kingsford at the time of the 2016 Census.

Kingsford was named after Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (1897–1935), as was the nearby Sydney Airport. In the 1940s, Kingsford became the area that many Greeks settled in, with many of them opening businesses in the area. In 1973, the Greek community built the Castellorizian Club on Anzac Parade, a nod to the country and city they migrated from. Kingsford was originally intended to be the terminus of the Eastern Suburbs railway line; but unfortunately due to cost-cutting the train line was never built to Kingsford and instead terminated at Bondi Junction in 1979.

At the centre of Kingsford was a large roundabout referred to as ‘nine-ways’. This round about linked Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road and connected a public transport system to nine possible destinations.  The construction of the light rail, saw this roundabout demolished to make way for the light rail tracks and terminus.  The light rail opened in April 2020 and connected the CBD to Kingsford.
