MORE INFO ABOUT BOTANY
There were 10,817 people in Botany at the 2016 Census.
The suburb’s name of Botany, comes from the bay it stands on. Captain James Cook first landed at Botany Bay on 29 April 1770, when navigating his way around Australia on his ship, the Endeavour. Captain Cook first referenced the bay as both Sting Rays Harbour and Botanists Bay in his journals. Later both these names were crossed out and were replaced with Botany Bay. While at Botany Bay the Endeavour’s English botanist Joseph Banks and Swedish assistant botanist Daniel Solander, spent many days on shore collecting a large number of specimens, of local fauna that were previously unknown in Europe.
