Bondi is said to be an adaptation of the Aboriginal word boondi meaning water breaking over rocks. Bondi has actually been spelt a number of different ways over time, including. Boondi, Bundi, Bundye. The current spelling was accepted as correct in 1827 and has since stuck. The entire Bondi area was part of a land grant of 200 acres in 1809 to road-builder William Roberts. Then in 1851, editor of the Sydney Monitor, Edward Smith Hall purchased the land for £200. Bondi Public School, which is located on Wellington Street, was built in 1883.
