MORE INFO ABOUT ALEXANDRIA
There was a population of 8,262 living in Alexandria, based on the 2016 Census.
In 1835, The Parish of Alexandria was established, and it was thought Alexandria may have been named after Princess Alexandra, Queen consort of King Edward VII. However, the dates did not add up, as Alexandra was born on 1 December 1844 and the parish's naming predates her birth by six years.
The Municipality of Alexandria was formed in 1868, after separating from Waterloo. Alexandria became one of the largest industrial district in Australia by 1943 and soon became known as "Birmingham of Australia". With so many industries the area produced everything from bricks to aeroplanes that were manufactured in over 550 factories in just 1,000 acres of area. It was in 1968 that the boundaries of Alexandria were changed again and it became part of a new municipality, South Sydney Council.
